A conversation: Are female Boomers and Millennials more alike than we might think?

For women, from our workplaces to our families, from education to finding a purpose in life, we might be surprised at the similarities across the generations.  We’re talking about the two largest generations living in the U.S. today: the 62 million Millennials (adults ages 20 to 35 in 2016) and the 70 million Baby Boomers (ages 52 to 70). Both groups came of age in times of recession and depression. The two generations share the desire to make the world a better place. Each generation considers themselves “rebels” and dislike stereotypes. Being recognized as a unique individual and not following in the footsteps of someone else is supremely important to both groups. Millennials are more connected to Boomers, because they understand the “rebel” roots of Boomers. And is it possible that Millennials want to collaborate more with Boomers to continue to drive change? Ramona Gallagher

Join us for a conversation about women’s generational similarities with our panel: Ramona Gallagher, retired labor arbitrator and Janna Willoughby-Lohr, owner of Buffalo-based Papercraft Miracles.

Ramona Gallagher has been a member of NYS Women, Inc. (and its predecessor, Business & Professional Women) since 1986.  Ramona was appointed Assistant Labor Commissioner in Buffalo in 1984 and served until 1996. She retired in 1999 after a 28-year career with the New York State Department of Labor. She was a Public Arbitrator with NASD; Labor Arbitrator on the labor panel of the American Arbitration Association, the NYS Employment Relations Board, and the NYS/CSEA Disciplinary Administration Panel. She also served as arbitrator/hearing officer for the National Lacrosse League/Professional Lacrosse Players Association, and previously for the International Hockey League/Professional Hockey Players Association.

She has served in various positions with NYS Women, Inc., including secretary on its board of directors, Region 8 treasurer and director, and president of the Buffalo chapter.  Ramona is a past president of YWCA of WNY Board of Directors, past president of Employee Relations Association of WNY, and past member of Labor Employment Relations Association of WNY.

JannaJanna Willoughby-Lohr founded Papercraft Miracles, an eco-friendly stationery and bookbinding studio in 2013.  It’s based in a mixed-use commercial building on Niagara Street in Black Rock that she and her husband bought.  It is residence and also houses commercial tenants, and their two studio spaces.

Janna came up with the concept of her business while in college: she’d to be an artist but wanted to make a living at it, so she created a her own major bringing entrepreneurial business and art together. In January 2016 after Janna had her first child, she quit her day-job and made Papercraft Miracles a full-time venture. Shortly after that, she acquired the equipment to create a papermaking studio. In 2018, Janna received one of the 27 Ignite Buffalo grants funded through 43 North and Facebook and was awarded $25,000 to help build the business as well as a year of business mentoring and coaching

Janna is a member of the Black Rock Riverside Business Alliance which works to improve the neighborhood, foster relationships amongst the existing businesses, and to draw new business to the area. She serves on the board of directors of the Buffalo Niagara Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). She teaches workshops in paper and book arts to children and adults in the community, including Printing Partner’s program at Journey’s End Refugee School, papermaking with the Ellicottville Central School (Ellicottville Students Preserving the Reading of America program), papermaking in several community gardens as part of the Read, Seed, Write program through JustBuffalo Literary Center, and bookbinding at the Parkside Day Camp.  Janna also donates 10% of the proceeds from the sales of all rainbow colored products to Gay & Lesbian Youth Services (GLYS) of WNY.
