Situational Awareness knowledge and living prepared are two key pieces to help thwart violence, because as women, we are especially vulnerable according to our speaker, Claire Knowles. Women, however, do not need statistics to convince us that the world can be a dangerous place for us regardless of our age. When we are out and about, or traveling/walking alone, there is increased risk of muggings, assault, rape, robbery, purse snatching, carjacking, even sex-trafficking. There is also domestic violence and workplace violence. (Did you know that workplace homicides and other violent acts are the leading cause of death for women at work?)
This short-version session will depict some of the human emotions that we hold and how being knowledgeable and prepared is a whole lot better than being helpless and panicked. This session will underscore the need to be risk-averse for our personal safety, and actions we can take to thwart violence. It will cover the basics of Situational Awareness – what we need to know. The “Color Code of Awareness” will be discussed, enabling participants to take an active role in their own safety whether in the public sphere or the workplace. We’ll also touch on domestic violence and what we can do to help victims. We’ll make a short note of how being situationally-aware in the workplace can help to thwart harassment and bullying from the inside culture, while keeping us alert to a perpetrator who may wish to enter the workplace to intentionally do harm.
Our speaker and BNC member Claire Knowles is a partner with Nagele, Knowles and Associates. She is a three-time best-selling author: “Lights On! Illuminations to Move Your Life Forward,” “Can You See them Now? Elephants in our Midst!” and most recently, “Guide to Reducing the Risk of Workplace Violence.”
Claire is a former HR/labor relations manager, having enjoyed a 34-year corporate career primarily untangling people and labor relations problems in large manufacturing facilities. She received her B.S. degree from the State University of New York, majoring in Business Management and Economics.
She is now a consultant and entrepreneur, primarily working with leaders who lead groups of people in organizations, businesses, work-groups and work-teams, and who are seeking greater effectiveness and better results. Engagement know-how is a clear piece of this effectiveness. Claire is an in-demand speaker and has appeared on radio/TV/blog-talk as an authority on leadership. Lately her emphasis has focused on workplace violence prevention, and she is a situational awareness specialist. She offers a course on Situational Awareness for Women.
